What is IMPACT2?
IMPACT2
is an educational program designed to help young adults with mental
retardation and/or developmental disabilities learn job skills
in order to become self-sufficient. These young people are
trained to provide assistance with activities of daily living
to individuals who are aging or disabled and unable to care for
themselves. The name IMPACT2 reflects how
both of these populations benefit from the program. IMPACT2
also serves as a prerequisite for some students who wish to further
their education in the North Carolina Personal Care Attendant
training or the Certified Nursing Assistant class at a local community
college.

Phase 1
Students spend three hours a day four days a week learning and
practicing personal care skills at Bell House. They participate
in classroom
activities that include puzzles, games, role-play and videos. Once
they demonstrate an understanding of a skill, they begin working
with Bell House residents under the supervision of the Certified
Nursing Assistants. This phase lasts approximately seven
months.
Phase 2
Following the training at Bell House, IMPACT 2 students participate
in an
internship at WellSpring Retirement Center. Each student is paired
with a Certified Nursing assistant, giving them an opportunity
to work with another population while continuing to practice their
skills. This phase lasts several weeks.
Phase 3
Some
graduates decide to continue their training in a Personal Care
Attendant or Certified Nursing Assistant program. Others
begin working with job coaches at ARC of Greensboro or Vocational
Rehabilitation in order to secure employment in the healthcare
field. Some IMPACT 2 students choose to stay and work at Bell
House.
